University gets silver STARS for sustainability
SFU’s sustainability achievements earned a Silver rating in 2011 from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.
The association’s sustainability tracking, assessment and rating system, or STARS, appraises and encourages sustainability in education and research, operations and planning, and administration and engagement.

Sustainable Communities award for SFU Community Trust
SFU Community Trust and the City of Burnaby won a Federation of Canadian Municipalities 2011 Sustainable Communities award in the integrated neighbourhood development category for their collaboration on SFU’s Burnaby campus UniverCity community.

Green-energy utility plans unveiled
SFU announced its partnership with SFU Community Trust, Corix Utilities and BC Hydro in 2011 on a new high-efficiency energy plant that will use wood waste to produce enough heat and hot water for the entire Burnaby campus and future homes in UniverCity.

Greening food services
The Residence Dining Hall and students in residence began participating in SFU’s first composting pilot program in 2011, while a new Go Green Container Exchange at all campus cafeterias was also created to help reduce waste on campus.

Banner project bags Green City award
A team from Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) saved three-quarters of a ton of nylon from landfills in 2011 and in the process taught hundreds of teens how some simple sewing can help the environment.
