SFU chemist joins Expedition Bolivia
Chemistry professor George Agnes joined Expedition Bolivia: La Ruta de Sal as its science advisor in 2011. The non-profit group Impossible2Possible (i2P), which uses global adventures to inspire students to make positive change in the world, organized the expedition. While on the trek, Agnes supervised daily chemistry experiments as thousands of participating high-school students and teachers worldwide took part via the Internet.

New MBA program offers international experience
The Beedie School of Business partnered with three other universities to offer a new master of business administration program for international executives in 2011. The two-year program, Americas MBA for Executives, began in the fall with 60 students from all four universities who will ultimately study management issues and attend classes in each of the four largest economies in the Americas.

Students’ Facebook campaign funds clean water in Africa
A village in Sierra Leone will have access to clean drinking water thanks to a Beedie School of Business MBA class project that raised $8,000 in 2011 with a one-dollar-per-like Facebook campaign.

Thai trekking
Assistant professor Kate Hennessy, who specializes in the anthropology of media at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT), returned to northern Thailand over the summer in 2011 to mentor student filmmakers. For the third year in a row, she taught at the Museums and Intangible Cultural Heritage field school organized by the Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre and UNESCO Bangkok.
