Egypt’s second revolution
SFU historian and Egyptian Canadian Paul Sedra is available to comment on what is being dubbed Egypt’s “second revolution.” Sedra watched with shock and fascination from Canada when the fall of former president Hosni Mubarak’s government plunged Egypt into political chaos.

Prejudice in social groups
In his lecture The Psychology of Improving Relations between Groups: Friendship, Prejudice Reduction, and Social Change, SFU social psychologist Stephen Wright will examine a compelling human problem. He will discuss why and how negative attitudes and unequal treatment continue to presist across social groups. “One thing that seems fairly clear,” says Wright, “is that friendly contact between members of different groups can lead to reduction in prejudice. However, what is less clear is why.” Wright’s lecture, part of a Canada Research Chairs Seminar Series, takes place Thurs., Nov. 24, 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. at the IRMACS Presentation Studio, Applied Science Building, 10900.

Mammography clinics at SFU
A day after a taskforce proposed new guidelines recommending that women aged 40-49 refrain from having routine mammograms, SFU Health and Counselling (H&C) Services is offering the screeningsTammy Blackwell, a registered nurse and manager of SFU H&C Services, says the clinics are part of a 2009 provincial government initiative to make breast cancer screening available to all B.C. women ages 40 to 79. “Changes may be recommended but it’s important to give all women choices and other B.C. post secondary institutions are involved in this breast screening initiative,” says Blackwell.  A taskforce created by the Public Health Agency of Canada is proposing breast cancer screening be scaled back for some women.

Physician Patrice Ranger, SFU H&C Services physician team lead, can offer thoughts on why it’s important for clinicians to continue offering mammograms to women aged 40 and above, regardless of proposed changes.
