Proportional representation plan not enough
British Columbia will get more MPs in Ottawa if new legislation to add 30 additional politicians to Parliament is approved by the Senate. “Adding six more B.C. MPs will be more representative but the system still needs a bigger fix,” says SFU political science professor Patrick Smith. He advocates for a real proportional representation plan that addresses the issue of the current government “continually talking about their strong mandate” despite garnering less than 40 per cent of the popular vote in the 2011 federal election. “That is not representative nor fair,” Smith adds.
