Immigration provides population boost
The latest census data from Statistics Canada shows Western Canada has surpassed Eastern Canada in population. This doesn’t surprise Gordon Price, director of SFU’s The City Program and a former Vancouver city councillor. He says people typically follow the money (and the resources), whether it’s from other parts of Canada or from around the world. “Interestingly, the growth rate of Canada has actually slowed due to the falling birth rate, but the difference has been made up by immigration,” says Price. “Consequently, we’re seeing the rise of ‘ethno suburbs’ such as Newton (BC) and Brampton, ON.
