New code of conduct announced for wireless companies

The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission announced today a new code of conduct that includes allowing consumers to cancel their cellphone contracts after two years and also unlock their devices after 90 days. SFU Communication professor Richard Smith says while this means shorter contracts for consumers; it may also signify the end of free cellphones due to a “shorter amortization period” for wireless carriers to recoup their costs. As for Canadian wireless companies, Smith says this news is likely not a surprise. The new code will institutionalize “good behavior” amongst wireless carriers, he says, but “we should have a business that wants to be known for excellent service and value.”
