Mandela’s birthday

Heribert Adam, an SFU sociology professor emeritus, is available to comment on the controversies and commendations that are accompanying the world’s celebration of former South African President Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday today. “Mandela’s political achievements in helping to rid South Africa of apartheid have turned him into a universal icon but his traditional upbringing and long imprisonment also transformed him into a controversial figure,” says Adam. The sociologist has spent the past four decades studying South Africa, including Mandela’s contributions and impact during and after the height of the apartheid movement.
