Hudson Bay buys luxury U.S. retailer

SFU marketing professor Steve Kates is available to comment about Hudson’s Bay Company acquiring U.S. luxury retailer Saks Inc. in a $2.9-billion deal. Kates says bringing Saks might create some initial excitement but, without a distinct value proposition, it may have no long-term effect whatsoever on the Canadian economy.

Hoarder needs professional help

The City of Burnaby has ordered an elderly resident to clean up his home or else it will do it for him and then send him the bill. SFU psychologist Joti Samra says hoarding is a clinical condition and requires integrated treatment from a psychological and social perspective. She believes the media spotlight on the property owner is not helping the situation. “Treatment of underlying mental health issues are key, and ostracizing someone for their behaviour without an understanding of underlying issues worsens the problem for the individual,” says Samra.
