Mandela’s condition serious but stable

Nelson Mandela remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. Among those watching reports on the health of the aging Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is SFU sociology professor emeritus Heribert Adam, who has spent the past four decades studying South Africa, including Mandela’s contributions and impact during and after the height of the apartheid movement. Adam met Mandela after his release from prison. (Adam also sent a book co-written by himself and wife Koglia Moodley, to Mandela during his incarceration).

Adam is available until June 17, and then again from July10 on.

Online voters give wheelchair athlete thumbs up

SFU English undergrad Jessica Kruger has become online voters’ top choice in the national contest to become the face of Lise Watier’s Something Sweet perfume. The physically striking provincial wheelchair rugby athlete, known as much for her success in a sport dubbed “murderball” as her modeling accomplishments, is now in line to be in the final stage of the contest. Barring any reason for disqualification, she will become one of five finalists who take part in a photo shoot July 11-12 in Montreal, which will enable the judges to make their final selection. Kruger, who is passionate about seeing societal views of disabled people change, can talk about why she feels winning this competition will help her contribute to that goal.

(Note: Her schedule of rugby games and classes is quite grueling so she may not respond immediately.)
