Victorian England meets Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside for two shows on December 15, when Bah! Humbug!, a modern day adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, returns to Simon Fraser University’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

Featuring 20 musical numbers, an audience sing-a-long, and an organic turkey draw, this SFU seasonal tradition showcases how Dickens’ timeless story continues to remains relevant, especially in light of parallels between the economic disparities of Victorian London and the DTES today.

“Each year, the adaptation has different creative twists and turns as we continue to highlight vital issues affecting the DTES,” explains Michael Boucher, director, Cultural Programs & Partnerships, SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs.

“Taking inspiration from Dickens, we’re proud to work in partnership with Vancouver Moving Theatre to benefit the development of a dynamic cultural program in our own community.”

Commissioned and co-produced by SFU Woodward’s cultural programs in partnership with Vancouver Moving Theatre, Bah! Humbug! benefits the Vancouver Community Arts Council and the Eastside Heart of the City Festival.

Directed by Max Reimer, Bah! Humbug! features award-winning actor Jay Brazeau as Ebenezer Scrooge, First Nations actor Margo Kane as the narrator, Juno-award winning musician and actor Jim Byrnes as Jacob Marley, and gospel and blues singer and actor Tom Pickett as Bob Cratchit.

“Our adaptation attempts to reflect Dickens’ sharp social commentary, without losing its warmth, while adding a local twist,” says Terry Hunter, executive director of Vancouver Moving Theatre.

This year’s show features an audience sing-a-long, seasonal refreshments, and an organic turkey draw at each performance, sponsored by Save-On-Meats.

Tickets for Bah! Humbug! are $20 for adults ($10 for students and seniors) and can be purchased online or at the door one hour before show time. More details about this performance can be found online.
