Kathleen Monk, the former NDP Director of Strategic Communications under Jack Layton, will be the featured speaker this semester as part of Simon Fraser University’s Margaret Lowe Benston Endowment Lecture Series on Friday, Dec. 7 pm at SFU’s Vancouver campus.

Monk currently serves as the executive director of the Broadbent Institute and will give a presentation entitled Women Winning: Strategies from an Insider.

During the 2011 Canadian federal election, Monk directed the media unit and served as a spokesperson for the NDP campaign. With the help of her efforts, the NDP had its best election result during its 50-year history.

A frequent commentator on Canadian politics, appearing regularly on the CBC, Monk volunteers with Equal Voice, an organization dedicating to electing more women into politics.

Presented by SFU’s Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, the Margaret Lowe Benston Endowment Lecture series is named in honour of the founder of the Women’s Studies department and features lecturers who embody the spirit and boldness of Benston.

An advocate for social justice and a strong supporter of the women’s movement who originally joined SFU as a Chemistry faculty member in 1966, Benston is remembered as being a leading feminist intellectual and inspiration.
