Honours for four outstanding alumni

Simon Fraser University Alumni Association has selected an influential figure in global financial regulation, a visionary in higher learning for indigenous peoples, an award-winning lawyer/filmmaker, and an internationally renowned cancer epidemiologist to receive 2012 Outstanding Alumni Awards.

The award recipients will be honoured during an awards dinner Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver.

The four were chosen from seven categories—academic achievement, arts and culture, athletics, professional achievement, public service, service to the community and service to the university—following nominations by alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members.

This year’s outstanding alumni are: 

Svein Andresen, BA ’81 (Econ), MA ’84 (Econ) – Public Service (Switzerland), an influential figure in global financial regulation and reform. As secretary general of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), he is leading efforts to build a more resilient global financial system in the wake of the international financial crisis;

Jo-ann Archibald, MEd ’84, PhD ‘97 – Academic Achievement (Vancouver) (Q’um Q’um Xiiem), from the Sto:lo Nation, has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of Aboriginal education provincially, nationally and internationally;

Joel Bakan, BA ’81 (Psychology) – Professional Achievement (Vancouver), an award-winning author, filmmaker, legal commentator, expert in constitutional and commercial law and an acclaimed law professor and teacher, he has contributed to landmark legal cases and government policy and served frequently as a media commentator;

John Spinelli, BSc ’79, MSc ’81, PhD ’94 (Math & Stats) – Academic Achievement (Vancouver), cancer control and prevention researcher, he is one of Canada’s leading cancer epidemiologists and biostatisticians and has made seminal contributions to the understanding of etiology of cancer, including key findings on occupational and environmental causes.
