Simon Fraser University students will be among those joining with City of Vancouver staff, university faculty members and designers on February 9 for a night of idea generation, inspiration and co-creative fun at “Nerd Jam.”
The event, which will focus on transforming Vancouver’s unused spaces, is a collaboration between the CityStudio program and the Vancouver Design Nerds, and aims to connect 150 students from six partner institutions (SFU, UBC, Emily Carr, BCIT, Langara College & Vancouver Community College) through a creative design process.
“This is the first time we are bringing this number of students together with faculty and city staff and we are experimenting with the creative potential of this kind of inter-disciplinary, inter-institutional event,” says Janet Moore, co-founder of CityStudio and an assistant professor with SFU’s Centre for Dialogue.
We are creating a space where people can connect, share their work and hopefully spark ideas for future projects.”
The night begins with potluck finger foods, drinks and mingling and then swiftly moves through the Nerd Jam process; where ideas are pitched in 90-second intervals and the top-15 ideas are then “jammed” about in small groups before reporting out to the collective Nerd Jam.
Deputy city manager Sadhu Johnston will also speak at the event, the third launched by CityStudio during its pilot year.
An idea that originally was presented during a Vancouver Design Nerd Jam, CityStudio is a program aimed at accelerating sustainability in higher learning while providing students with direct opportunities to work on the most challenging urban sustainability programs that Vancouver is facing, including Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 action plan.
