Central City Brew Pub is located at 13450-102nd Avenue in Surrey. Admission is free and appetizers will be provided.
The next in a series of Cafés Scientifique featuring experts from Simon Fraser University and Fraser Health will focus on how salt and blood pressure affect those with diabetes.
Will Cupples, a professor in SFU’s department of biomedical physiology and kinesiology, which is sponsoring the series, will share his latest research on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Central City Brew Pub in Surrey at 7:30 p.m.
In the long run, blood pressure is regulated by how the kidneys regulate salt content of the body. “Conversely, high blood pressure and diabetes are the major factors that cause chronic kidney disease,” says Cupples.
Cupples will talk about how kidney function may be dysregulated in diabetes, and how this may increase the kidney’s susceptibility to injury.
The fourth café in a five-part series, the session will be moderated by Marcia Carr, a clinical nurse specialist with Fraser Health’s medicine program in chronic disease management.
Meanwhile the final café, on March 7, will focus on the genetics of sudden cardiac death.
The Cafés are funded in part by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research. The public is welcome to join in the discussion and enjoy free appetizers.
