Fall Convocation set for Oct. 10 and 11

Honorary degrees will be conferred on a pioneering cardiologist, a former Simon Fraser University president and a Canadian soccer star during SFU’s Fall Convocation ceremonies Oct. 10 and 11.

John Webb, director of interventional cardiology at St. Paul’s Hospital, who pioneered one of the most important advances in heart disease in the last 25 years – the non-surgical transcatheter replacement of diseased heart valves – will be honoured during Thursday morning’s ceremony at 9:45 am.

Michael Stevenson, who led an organizational change and development initiative while president of SFU that included a $500-million expansion of campus facilities, will be recognized Thursday, Oct. 10 at the 2:30 pm ceremony.

And Christine Sinclair, a two-time Olympian who led the Canadian women’s soccer team to a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics, will be honoured on Friday, Oct. 11 during the 2:30 pm ceremony.

More than 2,100 students are eligible to take part in Fall Convocation.

Thursday morning’s ceremony will recognize those graduating from the faculties of Applied Sciences (FAS), Communication, Art and Technology (FCAT), and Health Sciences (FHS).

The afternoon ceremony will highlight those graduating in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).

On Friday morning students graduating from the Beedie School of Business and the Faculty of Science will be recognized, followed in the afternoon (2:30 p.m.) by those from the faculties of Education and Environment.
