Simon Fraser University Health Sciences professor Robert Hogg is being honoured for helping to save and improve the lives of vulnerable and marginalized populations through his HIV/AIDS research.

Hogg is the recipient of the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of B.C. (CUFA B.C.) 2013 Paz Buttedahl Career Achievement Award for his epidemiological research. His work has previously been recognized with scientific and community awards, highlighting its wide impact.

The award recognizes outstanding faculty members at B.C.'s public universities who use their research and scholarly work to benefit the general public.

“Dr. Hogg's commitment to vulnerable and marginalized populations is a perfect example of why we need publicly-funded research," says CUFA B.C. President Richard Kool.

Hogg studies how anti-retroviral drugs can prolong the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and prevent new infections. An internationally known population health researcher, he heads up a national network aimed at improving treatment in Canada called the Canadian Observational Cohort, which has been tracking 7,000 people who have started on antiretroviral medication since 2000.

“Dr. Hogg personifies our vision of an interdisciplinary faculty, where our faculty members build teams from "cell to society" in the pursuit of answering some of society's most pressing questions," says Faculty of Health Sciences Dean John O’Neil.

Adds SFU V-P Research Mario Pinto: “Dr. Hogg's work has impacted the field of HIV/AIDS research and touched the lives of those affected by the disease. He has also given back to his community and the university through teaching and mentoring many students who have gone on to their own successful careers.”

Hogg is also director of the Population Health Program at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and an adjunct professor in the Department of International Health and Cross-Cultural Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

He formerly held the Michael O'Shaughnessy Chair in Population Health at UBC.

The award was presented April 3 at a CUFA B.C. dinner at the Law Courts Inn in Vancouver.

CUFA B.C. represents 4,600 university professors, instructors, academic librarians and other academic staff at the province's five doctoral universities.
