University statement on alleged fraud
As a public educational institution, we take our fiduciary responsibilities seriously. Accordingly, when our Faculty of Science flagged a number of discrepancies involving invoices we immediately began a thorough internal investigation of this matter. Upon further examination, our internal auditor discovered information in 2012 that led the University to contact the RCMP. As a result of their investigation a former employee of the University has been charged with fraud and theft.
As with all large institutions, the University places people in positions of trust. As a matter of practice we have internal control procedures in place to ensure an ongoing review and audit of activities undertaken on behalf of the University. These processes led us to determine the circumstances in this case.
This incident has had no adverse effects on the teaching or research activities of the University, and our insurer has covered the loss.
As this matter is before the courts, the University will not be commenting further at this time.
