SF-659 Twin Coach 659 crossing market St. during the construction of the BART/Muni tunnel. The trolley could only be on 4th St. on route 30 Stockton, since the only other SE-bound crossing is further down Market St. for the 41 Union. Note the machinery digging the hole. This has forced the rerouting of the streetcar tracks as well as the overhead for Market St. trolleybuses. Note also the Mack diseasel and almost squeezed out of the picture, an unidentified PCC. The photographer seems to have too much exposure. Photographer unknown. Date somewhere from the early to mid 70s. Submitted by Wally Young.

SF-642 St. Louis 8xx on route 12 is passing Twin-Coach 642 on 26th St. between South Van Ness and Mission Sts. The T-C is at the terminus of route 41 Union, né route R and then route E before receiving a number. During this period the Mission Avenue trolleys were rerouted along S. Van Ness during the BART construction on Mission St. The southern half of route 41 was diseaselized in 1971 when Howard Sts. were turned into one-way streets affecting the 41. Inbound wires were to be installed on Folsom, but this never happened. Hetch-Hetchy wanted to move the wires from S. Van Ness over to Folsom St. south of about 11th St. or so, but Muni didn't want to spend the money. Hence the stalemate which unfortunately ended for good the southern have of route 41 (Muni's first trolleybus line, the R). Photo by Peter Ehrlich. 1970.
