The story behind the Tijuana Trolley goes back to the early years of the Macintosh. Someone designed a program that showed a succession of pictures appearing to be a limited movie video, though not a true video. One of these "videos" was entitled the Mexican Cafe. In this video we see a man walking from his his residence to a cafe (the Mexican cafe). While he walking various cars pass by him on the street. He enters the cafe, and we continue to see cars passing by. He exits the cafe and walks back to his residence. En route he suddenly explodes. The video ends with a moral which I can't remember.
This video amused me and I thought to myself, is it possible to add extra vehicles, say buses, or better yet, trolleybuses? I found a program that would create videos of this sort. I designed a trolleybus using rather crude pixel forms. I placed in Mexican Cafe, and presto! A trolleybus joined the cars passing the man on the street.
I then added an articulated trolley and a streetcar resembling somewhat a PCC. Of the drawings, only the one above was done on an independent graphic. The others were drawn within the program. The program was eventually bought out by a company that wanted $400 for an upgrade. The program does not work on 68040 macs and on the power mac. Hence I can no longer run it as I do not own an obsolete mac.
I initially posted the pixel version of the the Tijuana trolley on the web site. Soon thereafter, I spent a day redoing it in a graphics program and colourized it. If I can figure out how to get the remaining vehicles, I will do so.
