DR. PHIL HANSON RETIRES

Please join us September 7 in celebrating Philosophy professor, Phil Hanson's retirement. We will be wishing Phil our best wishes on his next adventure with several talks followed by a reception.

  • 2-5pm: talks by Calvin Normore and Jeff Pelletier 2-5pm at the Big Data Presentation Studio (ASB10900--this used to be called IRMACS; it is on the second floor over in the Computing Science Department.)
  • The reception following the talks will be held in the Atrium just outside the studio, where there will be hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and speeches.

Please join us - drop by to say hello and farewell to Phil, and thank him for his many years contributing to the life of the Department of Philosophy.

Heading towards the end of summer with a few updates from SFU Philosophy.

Graduate student, Zili Dong will be representing the department at the upcoming International Social Ontology Society meeting in Boston, MA with an essay, "The Reality of Institutional Kinds: A Causal Account" written for Jennifer Wang's class.

Congratulations to SFU Philosophy MA grad, Michaela Manson (2015) who is the recipient of this year's Jan Wojcik Memorial Prize from the Journal for the History of Philosophy for research into English philosopher and feminist writer, Mary Astell.

Course news: the Certificate in Ethics has been revised and updated to match elective courses in the five streams more closely with subject major requirements. Good news for undergrads outside Philosophy who want to add all the benefits of this subject into their subject Major.

Farewell! We're saying goodbye to three members of the department this summer. Phil Hanson retires at the end of August. Rosemary Twomey is heading to New York for a tenure-track position, and Jennifer Warriner is moving to Calgary. We thank them for all their hard work and wish them all the best in their new endeavours.
