Welcome to the graduate programs in philosophy at SFU
As a small department, we offer both the MA and PhD degrees through programs that have each been carefully designed to fill a special niche in philosophy graduate education.
Our MA program is geared towards students who have decided to pursue a PhD in philosophy, yet who currently lack the background or academic record required for entry into the world’s best philosophy departments. Our MA students are focused, energetic and talented, and together with the faculty, make for a vibrant departmental life. More information on the specialized MA
Our PhD program is a very small one, designed for students who have chosen SFU for ‘non-standard’ reasons—e.g. the inability to leave BC because of family obligations or health insurance, or the desire to work with a specific SFU department faculty member on a specialized thesis topic. We accept only a few exceptional candidates, but we welcome your application. Admissions criteria for the PhD
The department is particularly strong in Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, and we have expertise in some areas of Epistemology and Metaphysics, as well as in History of Early Modern, Analytic Philosophy and Logic. Several faculty members have strong interests in empirical research in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science.
