Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Quantum Information Theory

The Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Quantum Information Theory.

We are seeking a quantum information theorist who will contribute to the development of SFU’s growing quantum technology program and to the general development of quantum technologies. The candidate will have wide-ranging and relevant expertise in topics such as quantum dynamics in condensed matter systems, quantum control theory, quantum validation and verification, and the foundations of quantum physics.

Current quantum devices are in the few-qubit regime. They are undergoing significant iterative development, and the physics (error sources, interactions, and control fields) driving the performance of these systems is becoming better understood. Nevertheless, the exquisite degree of perfection required for large-scale quantum technologies means that extensive theoretical contributions to this development are imperative. We seek a quantum information theorist able to meaningfully contribute to this development by, e.g., developing higher-fidelity control techniques, customizing quantum information protocols to existing quantum systems, deducing and characterizing qubit imperfections, and modelling/engineering device structures or interactions to meet certain quantum performance characteristics.

In the medium term, quantum systems will move beyond what is classically easy to simulate (e.g. beyond about 15 qubits). This complexity will require an entirely new sort of assessment of quantum devices to be developed. The candidate will contribute to best practices to assess, control, validate and verify quantum performance in this post-classical regime. This new regime will also offer significant potential to test bigger questions associated with quantum mechanics, including various tests of quantum foundations. It will be an asset for the candidate to have experience in devising experimental tests of quantum foundations and in working closely with experimentalists towards this aim.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Simon Fraser University is committed to employment equity and encourages applications from all qualified women and men, including visible minorities, aboriginal people, and persons with disabilities.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, as well as a proposed program of research. This should include: an outline of the proposed CRC research program; an explanation of how the proposed research aligns with SFU’s 2016-2020 Strategic Research Plan; and a discussion of how this Chair would strengthen graduate training at SFU. In addition, applicants should arrange for six letters of recommendation* to be sent to:

Dr. Jeff Sonier, Chair

This position is contingent upon the applicant being awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair; therefore, only senior investigators with outstanding publication records and a proven track record of working with quantum technology communities will be considered. The position is tenable for seven years and renewable. Please review the initial appointment and chair renewal details of the CRC Program.

Applications will be accepted for a minimum of two months, until June 30, 2017. Review of applications will commence on May 31, 2017.

*Under the authority of the University Act, personal information that is required by the University for academic appointments will be collected. For further details see the Collection Notice.
