There is currently an intense world-wide effort to explore the possibility
of constructing functioning electronic devices with dimensions on the nanometer scale, i.e.,
much smaller than those that are used in computers that are based on today's silicon technology.
This is a very vibrant, rapidly developing multi-disciplinary field that brings together fundamental
and applied research, experiment and theory, physics and chemistry, biology and engineering.
Experimental research in this area at SFU currently focuses on the fabrication and characterization
of small volumes of materials grown by evaporation, chemical vapour deposition or electrochemistry,
and self-assembled molecular layers, patterned via lithography or focussed ion beam.
