Particle Physics and Field Theory
The study of the
elementary constituents of matter and their interactions has been transformed
by a series of revolutionary theoretical and experimental discoveries. These
include the discovery of the quark substructure of matter, the development
of fundamental theories of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions
based on gauge symmetries, and the discovery of superstring theory, which
provides the first consistent theoretical unification of all four fundamental
forces including gravity.
