In 2008, Simon Fraser University (SFU), the British Columbia Council for International Cooperation, and University of the Fraser Valley brought together academics, entrepreneurs, NGOs, funders, social innovators and technology experts in a 1.5-day Symposium and iiDevLab to incubate ideas to address issues of local and global concerns and fuel further innovation in support of partnerships for sustainable development (SDG 17).

The 1.5-day event was attended by 130+ participants and comprised of panel presentations and discussions on the following four themes:

  • Collaborations & Partnerships Across Sectors
  • Engaging the Private Sector
  • Big Data & Information Technology
  • Project Delivery

The June 2018 event included team formations and collaborations for cultivating innovative ideas and developing project proposals. The teams and project ideas that emerged on day 1 were then pitched to a panel of international development practitioners, technology experts and social innovators. The Clean Energy Research Group (CERG) emerged from Symposium and iiDevLab event.
