The SFU-NATO Field School and Simlation program is a 12 credit intensive upper-level Political Science course that combines coursework with experiential learning. The program will be open to universities accross Canada and provides the opportunity for students to observe and engage military personnel, policy advisors and diplomats in their workplace. This includes visiting and embedded experts from the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, NATO and academia, as well as high-level briefings at NATO HQ, SHAPE, and the Canadian Delegation to the European Union.

The cohort will attend familiarization visits at Canadian Armed Forces bases in Western Canada, then travel to NATO HQ in Belgium for a week of briefings by NATO officials. At the NATO Defense College (NDC) in Rome, the cohort will do four days of a professionally run NATO-simulation (NMDX) with NDC mentors and Senior Course curriculum. The 2018 field school will also visit the Canadian Battlegroup in Latvia, and NATO's Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga.

The Political Science NATO Field School offers applied learning and directed practice in the areas of national security and defence as well as international cooperation and diplomacy. This Field School introduces students to civilian and military practitioners and how an international organization, such as NATO, manages internal and external complexity in its attempt to translate national interests and principles into policy and common policy into operations. The professor and students will go on several day-trip excursions in BC, Brussels, Rome and Naples. The classroom learning, professional briefings and demonstrations culminate in a week of NATO crisis-management simulation at the NATO Defense College in Rome supported by background documents, video-based scenarios, and continuous feedback from NATO mentors.
