The Department of Political Science, through its academic programs, develops a critical outlook on questions relating to the theory and practice of political institutions, policy alternatives on major issues facing society, and political ideals, which influence public participation and the quality of political life in general. The programs provide a variety of courses on Canadian politics and government, and emphasize a comparative perspective on the political systems of the different regions of the world. The networks of political, judicial, economic, cultural and conflictual relationships which constitute the international community are also studied. Students become familiar with competing theoretical approaches and learn to engage in rigorous political analysis. The programs serve students with general interests in public affairs, as well as those who seek careers in teaching, research, law, journalism, public administration, or policy analysis.
SFU provides a boost to entering a rewarding career through the "Co-op" program, which gives you the opportunity to spend up to four semesters of your degree in a work place setting. Not only will you get a chance to apply your academic skills in a practical setting, but you will likely improve your chances of finding a good job after you have finished your degree.
A survey of Arts Co-op alumni who graduated between 1992-2000 found that 85% received job offers prior to, or just after, graduation. And, 65% of those offers came either from a former Co-op employer or from contacts made while in a Co-op placement.
Students often ask about future occupational choices relevant to their studies in Political Science. These are many and varied. At a general level, our program emphasizes development of critical analytical thinking and good research and report writing skills. With a significant component of our teaching seminar-based, students also develop interactive and oral presentation skills.
An education in the Arts /Humanities, with a specific focus on Political Science will give most graduates a strong foundation for a career in law. Many of our students plan to write the LSAT during their last two semesters at SFU. Legal studies can lead to many different career paths, including corporate work, labour law and environmental regulation.
Training in Political Science is an excellent preparation for investigative journalism or policy consulting work. Many large government agencies and departments, as well as private sector organizations, rely on outside policy consultants to help develop new approaches to management and regulation. Contract staff are also hired to carry out policy-oriented research. Newspapers, public interest research groups and public opinion pollsters hire researchers who have a thorough background in politics, political economy, policy analysis, political behaviour and quantitative analytical techniques.
Sometimes, further training or education beyond the BA level is required. Policy-oriented MA degrees can be a major asset in gaining employment with independent policy analysis groups.
Students wishing specific career advice may consult the Undergraduate Studies or Graduate Studies Chairs, the Departmental Assistant or the Department Chair.
