Eric Hershberg, Professor, is the Director of Latin American Studies. He is also the current President (2007-2009) of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) and Chair of the Board of Directors of the North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA). Prior to arriving at SFU he served as a Program Director at the Social Science Research Council in New York City and has taught at New York University, Southern Illinois University, Columbia, Princeton and the New School.
A specialist on the comparative politics of Latin America and on the politics of development, his current work analyzes social sector reforms in the Andean region and conflicts over accountability for human rights abuses under military regimes in the Latin America's Southern Cone.
Hershberg recently co-edited three volumes for which he contributed chapters: State and Society in Conflict: Comparative Perspectives on Andean Crises (with Paul W. Drake); Latin America After Neoliberalism: Turning the Tide in the 21st Century? (with Fred Rosen); and Memorias militares sobre la represion en el Cono Sur: Visiones en disputa en dictadura y democracia (with Felipe Aguero).
