Graduate studies in Political Science offers an M.A. and a Ph.D. programme in an environment that encourages intellectual growth. The faculty has diverse research interests and strong links across Canada and internationally, helping to create an active research community in the department. Moreover, a strong commitment to teaching with a large faculty to student ratio means that small seminars are the norm and graduate students work closely with faculty members.
A number of faculty members have close connections to other programmes at SFU, including Women's Studies, Canadian Studies, Latin American Studies, Urban Studies, Public Policy, the Asia-Canada Programme, Development Studies and the School for International Studies. In addition, our Department houses the Institute of Governance Studies which pursues multidisciplinary research into problems on contemporary governance with a special focus on British Columbia. We also house the Centre for Global Political Economy, an interdisciplinary research unit involving over 30 faculty and graduate students with interests in various aspects of the global political economy.
The department sponsors a regular Speaker Series where academics from inside and outside SFU present their research and we have recently launched a Research Workshop Group. Moreover, we have hosted a number of successful international conferences. In these forums our graduate students take an active role.
In short, having a faculty of 24 members who have a broad range of intellectual and disciplinary interests, multiple academic links, strong research and publication records as well as success in securing grants, and who accord a high priority to effective and challenging teaching, makes our department an exciting place for academic study.
Our graduate programme typically admits between 15 and 20 new students a year. They come from all across Canada and from outside the country. With the combination of new and continuing students, our graduate cohort is an important community within the Department and participates actively in Departmental affairs. Having a smaller graduate programme than the larger universities, we can provide more opportunities for our students to gain experience as Teaching and Research Assistants, we can offer greater flexibility to accommodate students requirements more resources for individual students and more chances to develop closer working relationships with faculty.
The University and its setting provide an excellent environment for academic study. SFU is a medium-sized institution that has been recognized as one of the best comprehensive universities in Canada by successive reviews in the annual MacleanÃs University ranking of universities. This reflects its high ratings on research grants and awards, new library acquisitions, the caliber of its students and its excellent reputation across the county. The setting of the University is one of exceptional beauty in a metropolitan region renowned for its outdoor attractions and its multicultural and cosmopolitan character. The opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation are numerous and the range of intellectual and cultural resources in the community is extensive. VancouverÃs position on the Pacific with connections to Asia and the US, as well as the rest of Canada, make it an attractive scholarly location.
