A building to build on
Congratulations to the Simon Fraser Student Society whose proposed 100,000-square-foot student union building got the nod from the student community during last week's referendum.
Besides adding much-needed lounge space, individual study areas, meeting rooms and recreational facilities at the Burnaby campus, the proposal would construct a 2,500-seat outdoor stadium at Terry Fox field.
SFU administration didn't get involved in the campaign–appropriately–but the outcome is clearly one that could go a long way to helping improve the quality of student life on the mountain.
The University will do its best to work through the details of the final agreement with the Student Society to achieve our common goal of an improved student experience.
Combined with planned improvements in food services and new initiatives to increase student engagement–including free admission to Clan games, the Winter Warm-up and an annual President’s Dream Colloquium–this proposal could significantly contribute to the realization of our new vision of SFU as The Engaged University.
A key goal of that vision is engaging students by fostering supportive campus environments.
While there's still plenty of work to be done before these new facilities are a reality, the results of last week’s referendum show that SFU students are prepared–in deed as well as word–to help create the engaged university we all desire.
