The university community was saddened by the news Friday of the death of former Vancouver Mayor Art Phillips, husband of SFU Chancellor Carole Taylor.

In his two terms as mayor in the 1970s, Art Phillips was instrumental in changing the course of Vancouver’s development and laying the groundwork for a more liveable, inclusive and sustainable community.  Founder of the investment firm, Phillips, Hager & North, he also served as a Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre.

Art and Carole were honoured by SFU in 2010 with the President’s Distinguished Community Leadership Award for their extraordinary records of public service and community contributions.

Art Phillips’ passing is a loss to us all, and our hearts go out to Carole and her family at this sad and difficult time.
