Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
Congratulations to our Outstanding Alumni
The contributions of our alumni are Simon Fraser University’s greatest achievement.
They reside in 141 countries around the globe and work in every occupation imaginable – a remarkable network of people empowered by the knowledge and skills they gained at SFU to build a better world.
This growing SFU family will mark an important milestone during Fall Convocation when we will reach and surpass 150,000 alumni.
And this week, the Outstand Alumni Awards shone a light on four extraordinary individuals who have distinguished themselves in our local communities and around the globe.
It is a privilege to congratulate the 2017 Outstanding Alumni Award recipients:
- Gary Cristall: co-founder of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival and longstanding arts advocate and cultural programmer;
- Nathan Nunn: Harvard University professor and one of the International Monetary Fund’s “25 economists under 45” shaping how we think about the global economy;
- Frode Strand-Nielsen: leader in responsible and ethical investments; founder of one of the fastest growing private equity firms in Europe; and
- Minister Yohana Yembise: eminent professor and first Papuan woman to obtain a seat in the Indonesian government as Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Protection.
These four exemplify one of the most important ways in which we are fulfilling our mission to be an “engaged university” – through the positive contributions of our alumni.
Congratulations to the Outstanding Alumni Award recipients, and to all SFU alumni – soon to be 150,000 strong - you make us proud to be a part of SFU.
