Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
Heartfelt thanks … and happy holidays
As the Fall semester comes to a close, and we all look forward to a well-deserved holiday break, I would like to express my appreciation to everyone at Simon Fraser University for another amazing year.
2017 was filled with many accomplishments and milestones.
During October convocation, we graduated our 150,000th student – a remarkable number of engaged alumni who are making a difference in more than 140 countries around the world.
Maclean’s Magazine proclaimed us Canada’s “Top Comprehensive University” for the ninth time in the past ten years.
QS ranked SFU faculty members second in Canada for their research impact.
Times Higher Education listed us amongst their world’s 55 “tech challenger universities.”
We gained recognition as an Ashoka Changemaker Campus for our leadership in social innovation and community engagement.
We launched Canada’s most powerful supercomputer in Burnaby, broke ground on a new Sustainable Energy Engineering Building in Surrey, and secured our position as the largest post-secondary presence in Vancouver.
We made progress advancing reconciliation with a concerted university-community effort led by the SFU Aboriginal Reconciliation Council.
And we engaged with communities like never before, hosting a week-long community-university expo, mounting our fifth annual SFU Public Square Community Summit, sponsoring the seventh annual Indian Summer Festival – and so much more.
We owe this success to the extraordinary talents and commitments of our faculty, staff and students, as well as to the amazing support we receive from our alumni, friends and community partners.
You make this university the remarkable institution it is.
As we head into the holidays, I hope that you’ll find time to relax with family and friends – you’ve earned it! I’ll be taking a few weeks off myself, and I’ll see you back here in January.
This year’s holiday video greeting was prepared by University Communications with help from some special guests who join me in wishing you a “sparktacular” holiday season!
