Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
Join SFU in the Walk for Reconciliation
The 2017 Walk for Reconciliation taking place this Sunday provides an important opportunity for people from throughout Metro Vancouver to show our solidarity with Indigenous peoples and demonstrate our commitment to the process of reconciliation.
All members of the Simon Fraser University community are invited to join representatives of our Indigenous Student Centre, who will meet at 8:30 am in front of BC Place Stadium by the Terry Fox Statue (Beatty and Robson).
The Walk begins at 9:30 am at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 650 Cambie St., and will be followed by a Reconciliation Expo in Strathcona Park.
SFU’s participation in the Walk is a further expression of our commitment to “honour the history, culture and presence of Aboriginal peoples,” an underlying principle of our vision to be an Engaged University.
On October 16, we will take another important step when the University will be presented with the final report of the SFU Aboriginal Reconciliation Council at a ceremony on our Burnaby campus. That report, Walk this Path With Us, is the product of a wide-ranging process of dialogue and consultation, and will further guide us in our reconciliation efforts.
I wish to thank all those at SFU working to advance the process of reconciliation. You are helping to demonstrate the important role that universities can play in building bridges, strengthening civil society, and moving forward in a spirit of mutual respect and shared understanding.
