Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
Welcome to the start of the academic year!
With the arrival of new students, the start of the academic year brings with it fresh energy and excitement.
If you’re coming to Simon Fraser University for the first time this fall, welcome to our community! You have made a great choice, and we at the university are here to help you succeed in your new academic adventure.
You will find that in addition to being Canada’s top comprehensive research university, SFU is an “engaged university” with three vibrant campuses offering a multitude of programs, activities and initiatives. Our goal is to connect students, faculty and staff, with each other and with the communities we serve – at home and around the globe.
I encourage all new students to take part in Welcome Day activities to learn about all SFU has to offer. We’ve also planned a Week of Welcome from September 5 to 8 with free food, music, and activities at all three campuses. These events are open to all students.
And I hope you’ll join me at university and community events this fall, including the President's Dream Colloquium on Women in Technology beginning September 13; Breakfast with the President on September 27; the Terry Fox Run on September 29; Fall Convocation ceremonies on October 5 and 6; and the first President’s Faculty Lecture with Dr. Rudy Reimer on October 10.
I look forward to engaging with you on campus and in the community. If you see me out and about, please introduce yourself. I always enjoy meeting students, hearing about your goals and achievements, and discussing how we can help SFU to further its vision as Canada’s engaged university.
A shout out to the 200+ “engaged” Welcome Leaders and Student Volunteers assisting our new students this week. Thank you!
