Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
A time to reaffirm our support for Indigenous Peoples
I join with other Canadian university presidents in extending my heartfelt sympathies to the family of Colten Boushie, and in recognizing the hurt that is being experienced at this difficult time by the broader Indigenous community.
“Respect for Aboriginal peoples and cultures” is a core principle of SFU’s Strategic Vision and, building on the work of our Aboriginal Reconciliation Council, we have pledged ourselves to the process of fostering a renewed relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
Universities have a vital role to play as instruments of reconciliation, and moments like this remind us of the importance of our efforts in furtherance of this goal.
SFU is committed to doing all that we can to combat the realities and consequences of racism, and to support our Indigenous students, faculty and staff, as well as Indigenous communities.
