SFU partnerships support social innovators and entrepreneurs

February 09, 2018

As Canada’s engaged university, SFU is proud to partner in initiatives that support the next generation of social innovators and entrepreneurs. This past week has provided evidence of our success in this regard with respect to three initiatives:

The RADIUS Fellowship

RADIUS, SFU’s social innovation lab and venture incubator, welcomed their 2018 Fellows cohort. These 16 remarkable individuals include alumni, humanitarians, conservationists and educators from diverse backgrounds. They will be working on projects that range from refugee and newcomer settlement, to health promotion, to the future of education and work.

A component of SFU Innovates – our university-wide innovation strategy – the RADIUS Fellowship is supported by the Beedie School of Business and the Vancouver Foundation, and is this community’s preeminent professional development program for emerging social innovators.

The Next 36

Three SFU student entrepreneurs were chosen this week to be part of the 2018 cohort of The Next 36. Ardalan Benam (Computing Science), Nell Du (Mechatronic Systems Engineering) and Rachel Chase (Business) will be mentored by Canadian business leaders and taught by some of the world's top faculty. In addition, they will be given opportunities to seek funding to develop their business ventures.

SFU has been an academic partner of the Next 36 since 2013, and boasts several program alumni.

Coast Capital Savings Venture Prize

Also this past week, the finalists for the Coast Capital Savings Venture Prize 2018 were revealed. Finalists will compete for generous cash and in-kind prizes on February 15. Many are participants of Coast Capital Savings Venture Connection, our university-wide student incubator, which to date has mentored over 170 early-stage business start-ups.

Please join me in congratulating these emerging social innovators and entrepreneurs and wishing them well in in their various endeavours.
