New Surrey building and program a boon for BC and Canada
Simon Fraser University was thrilled this week to officially open a state-of-the-art addition to its Surrey campus.
Funded jointly by the federal and provincial governments, and built in record time with support from the City of the Surrey, the award-winning building designed by the late Bing Thom will house our new Sustainable Energy Engineering Program. It will also provide space for other programs, including Mechatronics Systems Engineering as well as for community activities and events.
On hand for the opening ceremony were federal Treasury Board President Joyce Murray, BC Premier John Horgan, BC Advanced Education and Skills Training Minister Melanie Mark, and BC Jobs, Trade and Technology Minister Bruce Ralston. Also in attendance were Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, Kwantlen First Nation representatives, elected representatives from all levels of government, and members of the SFU and broader communities.
The Sustainable Energy Engineering Program, a first of its kind in Western Canada, will help meet the needs of the growing student population in Surrey, while also helping to position BC and Canada as leaders in clean-tech and sustainable energy technologies.
The facility and program are a wonderful illustration of the good things that can happen when three levels of government – and an engaged university – work together.
Opening Day was capped off with our annual Donor Appreciation Reception, celebrating SFU’s many supporters and volunteers.
