Welcome to the end of an era! As of March 2026, this version of the SFU Physics Student Association website has been officially retired and converted into a static legacy archive. For years, this Ruby/Middleman-powered site has hosted our news, recorded our events, and served as the digital home for the PSA. However, as web development aesthetics and technologies evolve, so must we. **What does this mean?** This site will remain permanently online as a historical time capsule. You can still browse through the `/news/` section to read about past events dating back over a decade, but no new content will be published here. We are currently building a brand-new, modern digital platform to serve the next generation of SFU physics students. A massive thank you to all the past executives, webmasters, and students who contributed to this version of the site over the years. We'll see you on the new platform soon!
Ok now this has been a long time... Welcome back to SFU for the fall 2024 semester, only 15 years after our last update. Some things have changed (namely the aesthetics of web development), and we think there is some charm in the way we used to share and live on the internet. Stay tuned for Physics Student Association Updates here, as well as on our Instagram page@sfu_psa! Let's get a quick recap: The last few years have seen fun events from bowling, skating, games nights, pub nights, and FROSH right up to our revival of the annual trivia night since COVID took a toll on student life. Over the summer, we saw many more undergrads enjoy working in USRA positions on fun physics projects, and unfortunately lost to the faculty in the Students vs. Faculty softball game (we'll get 'em next time). What can we look forward to now? Well, that's up to you! We have a slew of ideas on the burners going into September and want YOU to be a part! Come join us in the weekly PSA meetings in our common room (P9422) across from the first-year lab space. On top of being a great place to meet your peers, get help, study, and unwind, we offer free pizza and the ability to plan and fund amazing events! We look forward to seeing you (: Welcome Day on Tues, Sept 3: Come visit us at the physics department stop in the afternoon! SFSS Clubs Days on Sept 10 and 11th: See us at table 27 on either day near the center of convocation mall!
It was a very successful weekend for some of our fellow PSAer's at CUPC. Eric Thewalt won the 3rd top prize for oral presentations with "Testing Electroweak Universality with the PiENu Experiment", Gwen Eadie won 2nd top prize with her talk on "Resonating with the Sun: Schumann Resonance and Solar Flares" and Carolyn Kierens got an honorable mention for her poster presentation, "Spin polarization study of short-lived xenon". Way to go folks!
The PSA held a year-end party in the bio-phys lounge. Roughly about 30-40 people showed up. The party featured $1 BEvERages and $1 slices of pizza. Carolyn did a great job and after seeing how much she put into it I'm glad that I'm not PSA president.
For a full recap of what happened, view the meetingminutes. MORE talk about party plans and professor presentations (which by the way, were great). Thank you to doctors Hayden and McGuirk!
For a full recap of what happened, view the meetingminutes. More discussion about the Undergraduate Pacific Physics Conference. Party plans finalized.
For a full recap of what happened, view the meetingminutes. Mostly discussion about the Physics Conference going on at UBC soon and how awesome Steven is for buying a new computer.
For a full recap of what happened, view the meetingminutes. Carolyn Kierans was selected by her peers as the new president. She made a speech promising to do a good job and we are sure that she will. Steven let everyone know that he purchased new toner for the printer (yay) and that he is in the process of buying a new computer. Alex requested funding for an evening of fun in the common room before he moves to Mass. (passed).
For a full recap of what happened, view the meetingminutes. In short, the main topics discussed were funding assistance for students interested in attending the Women in Physics conference in California, the purchase of a new computer for the common room, and the addition of a forum to this website.
