Executive

The executive of the PSSU is made up of undergraduate political science students at SFU. We are you! We have executive meetings which are open to everyone twice a month, and an Annual General Meeting once a year to elect a new executive to serve YOU, SFU political science students!

Please do not hesitate to contact any of us if you have any ideas, suggestions, or concerns relating to political science at SFU! Any of us would be more than happy to help you! That's what we're here for! Watch this space for short bios and pics of your executive. For the time being, here is what everybody does:

Current Executive (as of Spring 2010)

President: Paige MacKenzie (plm1 AT sfu DOT ca)

Paige is a fourth year International Studies major specializing in security studies and a Political Science extended minor. When she is not attempting to save the world one starving child at a time she can be found traveling the world building elementary schools and sewing clothes for the less fortunate. She is an adherent to the vegan, gluten-free lifestyle and fervently believes that the only way to live is through cultivating one's own food (vegan-friendly of course!) so as to understand the importance of each and every life- that's right, they have lives too! Also, in her down time she enjoys maintaining her dreadlocks and doing yoga.

The President shall prepare the agendas, and chair all General and Executive committee Meetings, and shall be responsible for the coordination and continuity of the activities of the Union, with the primary emphasis to be a liaison with the Department. The President shall be one of two signing officers.

Treasurer: Estefania Duran (estef dot duran at gmail dot com)

The Treasurer shall maintain all financial records, report on the financial state of the Union to the Executive and General Meetings as well as present a budget at the General Meeting each semester. Treasurer shall also be the second of two signing officers.

Communications Officer: Sam Reynolds (samisreynolds at gmail dot com)

Sam Reynolds is a fourth year student at Simon Fraser University studying Political Science, History, and Communications. In addition to being the Communications Officer for the PSSU, Sam regularly contributes to The Peak, and sits as a Member at Large on The Peak Publication Society's board of directors.

The Communications Officer shall be responsible for the maintenance and utilization of the Union e-mail lists, the maintenance and utilization of the PSSU website, and the maintenance and utilization of any other forms of Internet based projects the PSSU undertakes. The Communications Officer shall also be in charge of the technical aspects of teleconferencing meetings when appropriate.

Secretary: Madina Tabesh (madinat at sfu dot ca)

Madina is a second year political science major, picking up her second major in statistics in the fall of 2012. Yeah that’s right; she’s THAT much of a nerd! You can find her reading her textbooks, highlighting notes, restocking pens, and general tom-foolery. Outside of academics, she enjoys writing trite blurbs about herself, thinking of rebuttals for hypothetical debates, and watching Barbra Streisand movies. You can often find her in her own world, with her head in the clouds.

The Secretary shall maintain an archive of all electronic and paper records of the society and report regrets and absence of executives according to section VI.8.

Forum Representative: John Morrison III (jam14 at sfu dot ca)

John is currently in his Nth year at SFU with a major in Political Science and minor in Communications. He is heavily involved at SFU, having worked for the Student Society, as well as the Peak. He is also a regional director for the Canadian Univeristy Press. In his spare time he enjoys making people laugh and patronizing the Highland Pub.

The SFSS Departmental Forum Representative shall represent the interests of the Union on the Student Forum, submit written forum reports and present them at all General Meetings on the activities of the Student Forum; and take direction from the Union, and other duties as defined by SFSS Rules, Standing Orders, Administrative Policies and Issue Policies.

Departmental Committee Representative: Daniel Shu (daniel dot shu at gmail dot come)

The Departmental Committee Representatives shall represent the interests of the Union in their particular committee, report regularly to the Executive and General Meetings, and take direction form the Union. The Departmental Committee representative must be able to attend departmental meetings regularly. Failure to do so is grounds for dismissal.

Promotions Coordinator: Kim Bloomfield (keb10 at sfu dot ca)

The Promotions Coordinator shall be in charge of all advertisement pertaining to PSSU initiatives. When necessary the Promotions Coordinator shall work in coordination with the Communications Officer on all web-based advertisement. This advertisement shall not include Executive or General Meetings, as this is the jurisdiction of the Communications Officer.

Administrative Editor-Journal: Chris Apps (cja5 AT sfu DOT ca)

Chris Apps is a fourth year Political Science-Latin American Studies Joint Major. If he cannot be found pedantically claiming to know how to solve the world's problems, he can be seen with his head tilted stoically upward, searching for a profound understanding of the cosmos. He is still searching. As Chris rides the dot, he looks for adventure around every corner, and hopes to learn anything he can. Chris enjoys Jeopardy, Star Wars, and policy. "It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas . . . If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you . . . On the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones." - Carl Sagan

The Journal Editor shall be in charge of the requisition of student papers, the organization of said papers, and the editing of the aforementioned papers into the Department of Political Science Journal: Undergraduate once per annum. He/she may call upon other Union members for support if needed

Member At Large: Nicole Robb (nmr4 at sfu dot ca)
