Letters of Recommendation
I am happy to consider requests to write letters of recommendation, but please review the following guidelines carefully.
Letters are best written by someone who knows you well. Thus, I usually will be able to write letters for students who have either taken a seminar course with me, or who have volunteered to work in my lab for at least two semesters.
Required Materials
Please provide me with the following materials via email attachments:
- A list of schools and the specific programs to which you are applying and application deadlines
- All the pdf rating forms from individual schools (if applicable) in which you waive access to the letter of recommendation and complete all contact information and save and send pdfs. If you aren’t able to save the forms, then just send the blank form and make sure you include in the list of schools what information (i.e., program applying to, your address etc) should go on the pdf form.
- Unofficial undergraduate transcripts from all institutions you attended. If you attended more than one school or you attended a school that doesn’t have a 4.0 or 4.33 rating system, please use one of these grade converters and provide your cgpa
- GRE scores if available, or other relevant scores
- Resume or CV, including your telephone, email, dates you worked in lab, specific activities, and immediate supervisors (make sure you include the month/year of start and finish dates of all activities)
- Statement of purpose (not necessary, but will be helpful in writing the letter)
- Copies of one paper that you wrote as part of a course requirements in a course you took with me and the feedback sheet. (Do NOT send papers from other courses)
- Please send all materials where possible as email attachments including the list of your schools and deadlines
- If necessary, addressed envelope for any school that requires snail mail letter (Please use my address, below, as the return address)
Timeline
- All of your materials should be delivered to me about one month prior to the first application deadline
- You may send me one reminder, via email, that your letters are due within 7-10 days
- I will send you an email confirmation once your letters have been submitted
Sending Letters
I prefer to send letters directly to the schools themselves to preserve confidentiality. Indicate in your list of schools if this is not allowed, and only then will I send you a letter directly.
Adding Schools to your List
I understand you may choose to add a program to your list after supplying me with your materials, but I strongly prefer to receive only one email with all the information.
