Sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.  Inadequate sleep is associated with many chronic diseases and conditions such as depression, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.  Insufficient or poor sleep is related to the onset of these diseases, and affects management and outcome.  Newlyweds in the study consistently reported getting less than enough sleep throughout the first two years of their marriages.  Adults generally need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per day, which includes naps.  Some strategies to improve sleep habits include going to bed at the same time each night, keeping the bedroom dark and quiet, and avoiding large meals before bedtime.
