Welcome to our Homepage!

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that affect how the brain processes information. Autism is a form of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and therefore affects all aspects of a child’s development including verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, learning and behavior. Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders, all of which share features of autism, include Rett's disorder, Asperger's syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative disorder, and PDD not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS).

Members of the Autism and Developmental Disorders Lab conduct research on the ways in which individuals with ASD pay attention to, interpret, and use sensory information to accomplish social goals. We are interested in investigating how different information processing styles may affect cognitive and social development, how the development of children with ASD may be similar or different from that of typically developing children and children with other developmental disorders. Ultimately, this information will contribute to identifying and intervening in ways that will maximally benefit the development of individuals with ASD and those with other developmental disorders.

Our research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) and the Consortium for the Advancement of Child Health (CACH). Students in our lab are also founded by the Autism Research Training (ART).
