Learn at Play Program
The Learn at Play Program is a free program designed to foster social-emotional growth in infants with Down Syndrome through play.
The Learn at Play Program is an early intervention program for children with Down Syndrome and their families. Through play children learn about themselves, others and their social world. The LAPP is provided by a transdiscpliary team made up of a psychologist, infant psychiatrist, speech language pathologist, and researchers. This program is designed to foster social emotional growth in your child, strengthen the bond between you and your child, improve communication skills, and optimize and support the development of social competence among children with Down Syndrome and family well being.
The program will cover parent's stress, beliefs about parenting, perceptions of child's behavior and mental/emotional states, and parent-child and play interactions. The program also covers child's temperament, development in various domains, emotions, medical issues, thinking, language, and social skills. Topics also include cohesiveness and adaptability in the family, as well as public resources and services, including accessibility, and quality of and satisfaction with services and professionals.
This program is part of a research project. Your participation in this program will allow us to collect data on your child's development. This data will serve to allow clinicians to refine this program in order to better meet the individual needs of your child, and contribute to research in the early development of children with Down Syndrome. To aid in data collection all sessions will be videotaped.
Eligibility: Infants between the ages of 3-9 months and their parent(s) are eligible for this program.
Time & Location: Sessions will be held Wednesday afternoons at DSRF. The infant and at least one parent are expected with regular attendance.
