James Climenhage

Interests: At present, I am a PhD student in the social psychology program at SFU. My research interests mainly center around categorization processes, specifically the influence of ingroup prototypicality on perceptions of the self and others. Currently, I am looking at how ingroup identification and target prototypicality influence facial perception as well as research looking at the influence of prototypicality and intragroup respect on group-serving behaviour.

Scott Neufeld

Interests:  I am a first year Master's student in the social psych program at SFU and excited to be starting my graduate studies with Dr. Schmitt. I received my BA in Honours Psychology from McGill University. I am particularly interested in research that investigates social creativity as a response to collective disadvantage and the subsequent formation of social identities that allow group members to positively evaluate dysfunctional group characteristics, thus inhibiting social change. Two social groups that I would like to work with are people living in areas of concentrated urban poverty and Aboriginal peoples in Canada. I am also fascinated by approaches to data collection that combine qualitative and quantitative methods and successfully bring the rigours of social psychology out of the laboratory and into the field.

Lisa Giamo

Interests:  I am a PhD student in Social Psychology. I received my BA in Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University and my MA from Simon Fraser University. My research  investigates the experiences of individuals who identify as multiracial and the potential psychological and social consequences of this identity. I am currently studying how multiracials' experiences with discrimination and sense of multiracial identification impact their psychological well-being. I am also interested in perceivers' categorization and subsequent judgments of multiracial targets.
