Effects of anxiety in children
Research has shown that people pay particular attention to expressions in other people's faces as this provides important social information. This study will look at how school-aged children react to facial emotional cues and how anxiety or shyness affects their responses. In adults, anxiety has been shown to increase a person's sensitivity to facial information.
It is important to know if children react in a similar way. Being very sensitive to certain kinds of emotional expressions, for example, may increase a child's anxiety in social situations.
Children who participate in this study will play a series of computer games in which they see a variety of faces. Their parents will also be asked to fill out a short description of their child and the children will also fill out some forms about themselves.
Children 8 - 12 years who are shy or anxious, especially in social situations.
This form does not bind you to participation. One of our lab members will contact you to arrange time, confirm interest and answer any questions you may have.
