Together with Dr. Young, a clinical developmental psychologist, our lab includes graduate and undergrad students all interested in exploring the mechanisms for healthy child development. Members of our lab are asking the following questions: How do children learn about emotions and social skills? What role do parents play in this process? What parts of the brain are involved in various activities and skills? How can we help children with emotional or social difficulties?
These questions are explored in a number of studies. Current studies in our laboratory involve having children look at pictures and play games on a computer. Others involve children and parents playing together. Some of our studies involve special groups of children, such as those who are very shy and/or anxious. These studies take place at other settings including BC Children’s Hospital. Finally, some of our research involves use of brain imaging equipment off the Simon Fraser University site. We include children from preschool ages through adolescents in our various research studies.
