What we want to know.

A child's development of social understanding and social skills can have lasting effects on their development across many areas. The goal of this study is to understand the factors that contribute to children's social development. We are particularly interested in how certain child characteristics (such as temperament) influence children's feelings and behaviour in social settings, such as daycare or nursery school.

About the study.

Mothers and children will come to our lab at Simon Fraser University for about 45 minutes. Mothers will be asked to complete a short series of questionnaires about their child. The questionnaires ask about the child's typical reactions and feelings in a variety of situations. Children will participate in a series of fun activities involving puppets and other games. Children will also be asked to look at pictures and match a word to the picture. Children who have participated in past studies of this sort have enjoyed their time in our lab. Children will also receive a small gift to thank them for their participation. finally, with your permission, your child's teacher or daycare provider will be asked to complete a short questionnaire describing your child at nursery school or daycare.
