SFU Public Square is offering a variety of exciting volunteer roles to support our initiatives leading up to the 2013 Community Summit Charting BCs Economic Future.
Volunteering with SFU Public Square provides exciting opportunities to network, develop new skills and become involved in meaningful community events!
The weekly commitment for volunteers ranges from 5 – 10 hours. Volunteer positions begin immediately and run through early October. We are accepting volunteers until the positions are full. Position descriptions are provided below.

Volunteer Roles and Details:
Volunteer Role: Event Planning Assistant This role is ideal for individuals looking for experience in event planning. You will be responsible for initiating and maintaining regular contact with a variety of key players. This is a fast paced position that involves juggling multiple responsibilities. Excellent communication skills and the ability to think on your feet are essential for this position!
General Responsibilities include
· Communicating and coordinating with service providers and event participants
· Providing general event support during events
· Arranging logistical event details, e.g. booking spaces
· Organizing and supporting community initiatives related to the Community Summit
· Promoting events leading up to the Community Summit
The ideal candidate...
Has excellent communication (written and verbal) and problem solving skills, is organized, adaptable, efficient, and reliable.

Time commitment: 5 – 10 hours per week
Days: Flexible

Location: SFU Harbour Centre Campus (some tasks can be completed from home)

Volunteer Role: Research Assistant This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about research and writing. Volunteering as a research assistant with SFU Public Square provides the opportunity to learn more about emerging issues of public concern, and to have your work featured on our website!
General Responsibilities include
· Writing bi-weekly blogs (related to Public Square topics, events, local news etc.)
· Supporting initiatives of Public Square team members with targeted research
· Interviewing and writing SFU Public Square innovator profiles
· Helping develop/edit SFU Public Square documents
· Researching and creating content for social media
The ideal candidate…
Has excellent writing and research skills, competency using social media platforms (e.g. Facebook and Twitter), an interest in Public Square initiatives, is detail oriented, able to follow direction, a self-starter and reliable.

Volunteer Role: Office Assistant This position is excellent for individuals who enjoy or who are seeking administrative experience. The office assistant will help organize online databases, format written content into html and provide general office support.
General Responsibilities include
· Organizing online databases
· Working with online templates to update webpages
· Formatting content into html
· Providing general office support
· Sending SFU Public square information to participants and community groups (over e-mail and regular mail)

Is highly organized, computer savy, reliable, efficient, has exceptional time management skills, is detail oriented, and able to follow direction.

Commitment and Responsibiities:
Volunteers will be assigned to roles based on personal availability and interest. Opportunities with SFU Public Square range from short term commitments such as general event support to longer term intership positions.
About SFU Public Square
SFU Public Square is a signature initiative designed to
spark, nurture and restore community connections. We have three main components: annual Community Summit, responsive programming, and SFU Public Square branded activities, such as City Conversations, Lunch Poems, and the President's Faculty Lecture Series.

SFU Public Square specializes in hosting collaborative and meaningful community events. SFU Public Square staff and volunteers are integral to the success of our programming.
