President's Faculty Lecture:
Dr. Angela Brooks-Wilson

What Can Super-Seniors Tell Us About Healthy Aging and Genetics?

The Healthy Aging Study investigates exceptionally healthy elderly individuals we call ‘Super-Seniors,’ to gain insight into how genetics and other factors influence healthy aging. Super-Seniors are individuals 85 years old or older who have never been diagnosed with cancer, cardiovascular disease, major pulmonary disease, diabetes or dementia. The study now includes 700 Super-Seniors, and continues to welcome new participants from across Canada. Join Dr. Angela Brooks-Wilson as she discusses the lifestyles and genetics of these Super-Seniors.

Dr. Angela Brooks-Wilson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology at SFU and Distinguished Scientist at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre at the BC Cancer Agency. Her current research focuses on the genetics of healthy aging and the genetics of susceptibility to cancer, particularly blood cancers, in families and populations. She leads a Healthy Aging Study in which exceptionally healthy elderly individuals, ‘Super-Seniors,’ are helping to determine the genetic influences that contribute to healthy aging and protect against age-related diseases.
